We love fried chicken around here!! Sesame Shnitzelonim are a staple for family dinners in my house, and for the weekend I often make Honey Garlic Chicken Katsu or a Crispy Lemon Chicken. They all get rave reviews and when something is that delicious, it goes on repeat!
Our newest addition has quickly become a favorite! My husband asks me to make “that DELICIOUS chicken with the crunchy stuff” (lol!!), all the time.
For this recipe we cut chicken breast into cubes, dunk them into egg, and make an everything bagel seasoning that coats the chicken. Then fry it up, and serve with a great honey mustard dipping sauce!
The Full Meal
To round out this fried dish and make it the perfect option for the littles, we serve it with a whole bunch of cut up vegetables! Try to cut everything into equally shaped slices for the look, and use a variety of colored vegetables to get the kids excited.
I find everyone more willing to eat their healthy food when it’s served with something yummy to dip into, and also something hearty(aka chicken!).
Chicken Breast or Thigh?
You can use either chicken breast or chicken thigh for this recipe! Chicken thighs tend to stay juicy for longer but are also more pricey, so do you.
You can slice these into finger length strips for everything bagel chicken tenders, or into cubes for poppers.
Everything Bagel Seasoning
For the crispiest chicken poppers we make a simple everything bagel seasoning mixed with golden breadcrumbs or Panko(Japanese breadcrumbs). First we dip the chicken into egg to give the seasoning something to adhere to, and then into the crunchy coating.
For the Seasoning you need:
- 1 cup golden breadcrumbs (SUBSTITUTE WITH PANKO)
- 3 Tbsp sesame seeds
- 3 Tbsp poppy seeds
- 2 Tbsp black sesame seeds
- 2 Tbsp onion flakes
- 1 ½ tsp sea salt flakes or coarse salt
- 3 tsp garlic granules or garlic powder
[Everything Bagel Chicken] Meal Prep Directions
This recipe is great for making ahead of time! Cube the chicken and bread as instructed, then place into ziplock baggies with the serving size you need, and pop in the freezer. To prevent the poppers from freezing to each other you can place them on a sheet pan in a single layer and pre- freeze them, then place into bags/containers.
The dipping sauce can be made and sealed in an airtight bag and kept in the fridge for about a week, although mine has never lasted that long! We serve it with everything!
Honey Mustard Sauce
The perfect accompaniment to these poppers is a simple sweet honey mustard dipping sauce. You can also place out some ketchup/thousand island dressing/whatever dressing your kids love.
for the sauce you need:
- ⅛ cup dijon mustard or yellow mustard, no seeds!
- ⅛ cup honey
- 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (can substitute with regular vinegar)
- ½ tsp paprika

Everything Bagel Chicken Poppers
Ingredients
Poppers:
- 2 lbs/1 kilo chicken breast cut into cubes
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup golden breadcrumbs
- 3 Tbsp sesame seeds
- 3 Tbsp poppy seeds
- 2 Tbsp black sesame seeds
- 2 Tbsp onion flakes
- 1 ½ tsp sea salt flakes or coarse salt
- 3 tsp garlic granules or garlic powder
- Canola oil for frying
Honey Mustard Sauce:
- ⅛ cup dijon mustard or yellow mustard no seeds
- ⅛ cup honey
- 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
- ½ tsp paprika
For serving:
- 2 cucumbers sliced into sticks
- 2 carrots peeled and sliced into finger length sticks
- A handful cherry tomatoes quartered
Extras:Ketchup, BBQ sauce, thousand island sauce, regular mustard, garlic mayo
Instructions
- Lay out two shallow rimmed plates or bowls.
- Add eggs to one and whisk.
- To the next, add breadcrumbs, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, black sesame, onion flakes, salt, and garlic powder. Mix to combine well.
- Add chicken to the eggs and toss to coat. Working a few at a time, dredge in seasoned breadcrumbs.
- *These freeze great. Place breaded chicken poppers onto a baking tray fitted with parchment and into the freezer for an hour or two, and then transfer to a ziplock bag. Pre-freezing keeps them from sticking to each other. When ready to eat fry directly from the freezer
- Heat up about 2 inches of oil in a pan. Taking care not to crowd the oil, add poppers and fry till golden, 2-3 minutes, then flip and fry the second side. Remove to a paper towel.
- For the dipping sauce, combine all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well. (this can also be made in advance and kept in the fridge!)
