The Best Deli Roll Recipe
..is also the easiest deli roll recipe.
Deli Roll for me is something that is quick to whip up, good to eat hot or cold, can be prepped in advance. It can be served as a main for lunch or snacked on throughout the day or even made for a super easy kids friendly meal.
This recipe is a friend of mines from when I was studying in Seminary in Israel. Every shabbat she would make this deli roll and everyone always went crazy for it. Always. Like no matter how many times they had tried it that day was the best day.
Thank you Shani for the recipe!
How to Make Deli Roll
This quintessential Jewish food is so easy to prepare.
- caramelize the onions. thinly slice two large onions(trust me, they shrink!), add to a hot pan with a bit of oil and let them get nice and golden.
- meanwhile, soak a few wooden skewers in water(this prevents burning in the oven).
- add bbq ingredients to a bowl and mix to combine.
- assemble: flour your work surface, lay out a square of dairy free puff pastry and flour the top, then roll it out so its not too thick. cut out a large circle, spread with bbq sauce and onions, then layer on deli meat.
- roll up like a cinnamon bun and cut into one inch slices.
- thread the slices onto skewers and place puff pastry side up- then brush with egg and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
- bake for 25 minutes.
Deli roll is often served on Shabbat day as a lunch meal. Make it the night before for an easy prep and keep covered in the fridge or bake fresh.
Deli Roll substitutions
No onions? You can make it without them. Although I don’t suggest it. They add so much flavor but it will still be yum if you’re in a bind!
Regular vinegar or apple cider vinegar? Shani uses apple cider vinegar in the OG recipe but Ive tried it(many times)with regular white vinegar and its great!
What kind of deli? This is up to you- expensive deli(like smoked shoulder), would obviously elevate the taste but we usually use a regular kid-friendly deli. I DO however, like to use both pastrami and turkey for best flavor.
Brown or white sugar? This is no sub area. you MUST use brown sugar here! Thanks. Thats it. Go make it.

- 4 Tbs ketchup
- 2 Tbs apple cider vinegar sub with white vinegar
- 1 tsp mustard
Instructions
Prep:
- Soak wooden skewers in water to prevent burning in the oven.Beat egg in a small bowl.Preheat oven to 350° f (180°c).
Make it
- Add 2 Tbs oil to a hot pan and add 2 onions, thinly sliced. Cook over low heat until caramelized and golden, stirring often. Be patient, this will take around 20 minutes. Meanwhile....
- Add sauce ingredients to a bowl and mix to combine. Flour your work surface and lay out a large square of puff pastry- sprinkle the top with flour. Roll out so its not too thick but not too thin. Cut out a large circle.(you'll make two of these but do one at a time)Spread on a layer of bbq sauce. Add onions to top. Layer over deli to cover the whole surface of puff pastry. I do a line of turkey then a line of pastrami. Give love to the edges! Roll up starting from the edge closest to you, rolling away from your body to make a nice tight roll. Slice into 1-inch thick slices.Skewer onto the skewers. You can do this one on each small skewers or a 2-3 on a longer skewer.
- Place on a baking tray puff pastry side up. brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 25 minutes. Enjoy!
- Store:store covered in the fridge for a day and reheat before serving or serve at room temperature( I like them warm best).
