Equipment

  • wooden skewers

Ingredients

  • one package puff pastry
  • 2 Tbs oil
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • one package deli meat (mix of turkey and pastrami is our favorite)
  • one egg
  • sesame seeds for finishing

THE SAUCE

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 4 Tbs ketchup
  • 2 Tbs apple cider vinegar sub with white vinegar
  • 1 tsp mustard

Instructions

Prep:

  • Soak wooden skewers in water to prevent burning in the oven.
Beat egg in a small bowl.
    Preheat oven to 350° f (180°c).

Make it

  • Add 2 Tbs oil to a hot pan and add 2 onions, thinly sliced. Cook over low heat until caramelized and golden, stirring often. Be patient, this will take around 20 minutes. Meanwhile....
  • Add sauce ingredients to a bowl and mix to combine.
Flour your work surface and lay out a large square of puff pastry- sprinkle the top with flour. Roll out so its not too thick but not too thin. Cut out a large circle.(you'll make two of these but do one at a time)
Spread on a layer of bbq sauce. Add onions to top.
Layer over deli to cover the whole surface of puff pastry. I do a line of turkey then a line of pastrami. Give love to the edges!
Roll up starting from the edge closest to you, rolling away from your body to make a nice tight roll.
    Slice into 1-inch thick slices.
Skewer onto the skewers. You can do this one on each small skewers or a 2-3 on a longer skewer.
  • Place on a baking tray puff pastry side up. brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
    Bake for 25 minutes. Enjoy!
  • Store:
store covered in the fridge for a day and reheat before serving or serve at room temperature( I like them warm best).
